Note from Pastor Andy
Our movie this week for “Maplewood at the Movies” is a light-hearted Disney classic, “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.” It will be an obvious contrast from our first two films, which were much “heavier” in their feel.
We’ll watch the 1993 version of the story, which was a remake of the 1963 original that was titled simply, “The Incredible Journey.” Since our theme for the summer is “Feline Films,” you know of course that one of the movies central characters is a cat, in this case a spoiled Persian named Sassy.
The story is a study in perseverance. Sassy and her two dog companions embark on a journey through the wilderness to get back to their home. It is a classic “hero’s quest” plot line, in which our three protagonists face obstacles and opposition all along their way, and have to overcome them all together in order to arrive at their destination.
The book of Hebrews, chapter 12, encourages us to “run with perseverance the race that is set before us.” Often our spiritual lives are compared to a journey; “faith journey” is a common term to describe one’s relationship with God over the course of one’s life. There are times of progress, of smooth sailing, and times of setback and challenge. All a part of the journey.
Hebrews 12 emphasizes the value of community to our journey. We are “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,” who are supporting, encouraging, and holding us accountable to the path ahead. In “Homeward Bound,” Sassy and her friends have each other. And also their family who is searching for them and the forest rangers who eventually find them. They are able to persevere because of the community around them, just as we are.
So we will watch a fun movie this week, a typically Disney film complete with talking animals and a happy ending! I hope you’ll come and enjoy the movie Thursday evening at 7:00, and be in worship next Sunday at 11:00 as we talk about how the support of community makes it possible for us to persevere on our “incredible journey.”
I’ll see y’all in church!

On Thursday nights, August 7, and August 14, all are welcome to the Fellowship Hall of Maplewood United Methodist Church for a free movie screening. Movies will start at 7:00 pm, and there will be a brief discussion following, for those interested. All four movies feature cats, so we’re calling the series “Feline Films.”
Each week, the movie shown on Thursday will provide the spiritual basis for the following Sunday’s sermon. You don’t necessarily have to have seen the movie in order to get something from the service, however. This series is a fun way to paws in the middle of the week, gather together and grow in faith. It is also a really easy opportunity to invite someone to church with you! “Make it Maplewood!”
