This Sunday is Peace with Justice Sunday
WHAT IS PEACE WITH JUSTICE SUNDAY?
The United Methodist Church uses this day to speak out for peace and justice. Our Social Principles call us to love our enemies, seek justice, and serve as peacemakers in resolving conflict. We renew our commitment that to live into our mission of transforming the world, we must prioritize collaboration among nations, work to reduce the use and need for weapons, and foster just, equitable and durable solutions to the root causes of conflict.
Peace with Justice Sunday is one of the six Special Sundays that are celebrated every year in the United Methodist Church
At the end of every Annual Conference appointments are set as to what pastors will be going to what churches. We are excited to announce that Pastor Andy Bryan has been appointed to Maplewood United Methodist Church for another year of exciting ministry!!!!
Note from Pastor Andy
Beginning Sunday, June 15th, Maplewood UMC will spend four weeks with the prophet Amos. The series is titled, “Let Justice Roll!” - a nod to one of the most familiar lines in the book, “But let justice roll down like water and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” (Amos 5:24)
The cry for justice is an ancient one. Amos is just one of a long, historic line of prophets called to shine light on systemic oppression and warn of dire consequences.
The wealthy, it seems, have always needed to be reminded of how their actions “trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth” (Amos 2:7).
The powerful, it seems, have always needed to be shown how their decisions “oppress the poor” and “crush the needy (Amos 4:1).
The privileged, it seems, have always needed someone to point out how their privileged positions “push the afflicted out of the way” (Amos 2:7).
As you can tell even from these short quotations, Amos does not hold back. We are in for four weeks of some pretty intense prophetic witness, so hang on to your hats everyone! There is hope, always. Of course there is. And we will get there, I promise. Amos ends his prophecy with words of hope, but we have ways to go before we get there.
So let’s go on this journey together, and spend some time with Amos. I encourage you to read the book of Amos this week in preparation for the series. It isn’t very long. In addition, I commend the Bible Project video about the book of Amos to you. It provides a very good summary of the book’s context and contents. You can view that video HERE.
“Let Justice Roll!” begins this Sunday, and I can’t wait to roll down the river with you!
