Verbena & flowing water in Coyote Canyon. Photos by Don Chism. | |
Coyote Canyon is a great place to explore, especially right now with the wildflowers in full bloom! It's a short & easy trip from town. The mileage listed below is from the end of the pavement.
Things to do in Coyote Canyon:
- Check out the interpretative panels at the entrance to Coyote Canyon (mile 0).
- View and walk through the beautiful flower fields (1st mile or so as you drive in).
- Hike up to Alcoholic Pass (mile 2.4).
- Enjoy a nice picnic & hike the loop trail at Desert Gardens (mile 3.1).
- Drive past Desert Gardens to see lots of ocotillo & cactus - both should be starting to bloom soon.
- Hike the Lower Willows Loop trail - the parking area is just before the third crossing (mile 5.6)
- Drive up Boulder Alley (mile 6), a very steep and rocky jeep road, which leads you up the hill to Collins Valley, Sheep Canyon, Cougar Canyon and Indian Canyon

by Scott Burnham.

|
How to get there:
From Christmas Circle, drive east on Palm Canyon Drive for 0.5 miles, turn left (north) on DiGiorgio Road, and drive 4.7 miles to the end of the pavement. You can park here at the interpretative panels or drive straight ahead on the dirt road. 2WD is OK to Desert Gardens, but high clearance 4WD is strongly recommended beyond that. There are three water crossings (3.5, 5 and 5.6 miles past the pavement) that will likely have water due to the recent rains - exercise caution as you drive through these.

The 2023 Borrego Valley Hawk Watch is still underway!
Each year, Swainson's Hawks migrate over 6000 miles from Argentina to their breeding grounds up north. Lucky for us, Borrego Springs is on their route! A dedicated team of volunteers ("citizen scientists") watch for hawks in the morning and again in the early evening at designated spots.
On the morning of March 12, more than 1000 hawks were spotted! Stay tuned to see what the final hawk counts when the Hawkwatch concludes in early April.
