“Southern California singer-songwriter Mara Connor pays tribute to her roots with her delightfully bright debut single. It’s a promising sign for this newcomer, and all that retro flavor never stops this song from sounding like right now.”

— Brittany Spanos

“One of the '12 best up-and-coming bands and artists at SXSW…‘The Los Angeles-based singer demonstrated poise and a clear voice…’"

— Greg Kot

“Somewhere between a mod balladeer and an indie folk goddess, the Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter is definitely an older soul...revealing something sultry, something country, and something uniquely hers.”

— Tina Benitez-Eves

In her timely new single, LA native Mara Connor examines the “American Dream” that so many spend their lives chasing but never attain. Not shying away from taking a political stance, the final verse takes a dig at Trump, “another billionaire who swears he’s for the proletariat,” highlighting the hypocrisy of the former president and how many hardworking Americans vote against their own interests.

“This is a reminder of what’s at stake in this upcoming election…human decency, fundamental rights and democracy itself. Here’s hoping for a brighter future that includes everyone.” Connor says.

“LA native Mara Connor has sharpened her political sword on new single “American Dream,” cooking up a timely thriller that takes aim at those who prey on the vulnerable.”

- Will Schube, Flood Magazine

“‘American Dream’ by Mara Connor: I like that song so much and what it says, I just might play it every week between now and the election.”

- Kevin Bronson, Buzzbands & The SoCal Sound

Mara produced the track between her hometown of LA and NYC with the help of her friends Adrian Simon (son of Paul Simon and Edie Brickell) and Dillon Casey (Orville Peck, Weyes Blood) who both played on the track along with Zac Coe (Del Water Gap) on drums.

The song made its radio premiere via The SoCal Sound on Kevin Bronson’s show (Kevin has been a supporter since day one, ranking Mara’s first single “No Fun” his “No. 1 favorite song of the year” and calling it a “stone cold classic pop song”).

Mara Connor has already been lauded by Rolling Stone, Chicago Tribune, Consequence, American Songwriter and KCRW as a unique and exciting new voice in music. With only four original songs and a handful of covers released thus far, this marks a new era of Connor’s music with lots more in the pipeline, including a forthcoming duet with Margo Price

The music video was directed by Mara, edited by Ross Kolton (The Avett Brothers) and shot by Justin Kohlberg around LA’s historic Pasadena neighborhood (at retro storefronts, a baseball diamond and a friend’s record shop). Citing classic 70s cinema like “Five Easy Pieces” and the TV show “Friday Night Lights” as visual inspiration, Mara says “I wanted to capture a faded, mid-century Americana look and feel…beautiful things that are past their prime and despite years of neglect are still standing, as a loose metaphor for the ‘American Dream’ I sing about.”

She borrowed her country singer buddy Cale Tyson’s old truck (who she just performed with at Bonnaroo) which broke down twice during the shoot and had to be towed before the day was through…she put the truck in neutral and steered it as her DP and kind strangers pushed it to safety. The lesson learned? Never shoot a video during Mercury retrograde.

Mara is currently on tour in Japan. Her video release show will be on

Tuesday, October 29th at LA’s Healing Force of the Universe.
