I am far more acquainted with Hallmark Channel movies than I care to admit. The Hallmark stories are favorites of my wife and, consequently, I have been introduced to several. For those unfamiliar with these decidedly emotional dramas, they tend to follow a pattern of the female heroine first facing loss, then confronting bitter and largely unfair hardships, followed by meeting a noble and kind new friend and/or love interest, who then after a few missteps and foibles ultimately helps restore the heroine to a place of stability and happiness. The writers of these stories owe royalties to the unknown author of the book of Ruth in my opinion.
The first chapter lays out the story, but the highlight is the love and devotion of the eponymous Ruth toward her mother-in-law Naomi. It is a shining example of love, commitment, selflessness and faithfulness to God in the midst of hardship.
The pinnacle is Ruth's declaration to Naomi that "your people will be my people, and your God will be my God."
Pray: Lord, may my life declare my commitment to you by my service to others.
