Moses, coming fresh from God's majestic and frightening presence, warned the Israelites to strictly avoid any form of idolatry. After all, they were only weeks away from Egypt, which was itself saturated with all kinds of idolatry. They were to worship only the Lord God himself, who had so miraculously planned and executed their deliverance from abject poverty and slavery there. At first glance it doesn't seem so relevant to us today. Or is it? Is he, the God of the Bible, the Creator, Sustainer, Redeemer, truly the object of the desires of our hearts? What are the things deep inside that we desire the most - maybe our career or our family? What is really at the center of our thoughts, the things we think about in the stillness of the night? What truly "drives" our lives? If it is anything other than pleasing God, then perhaps we need to confess, apologize to him and receive his mercy. Verse 31 assures us so graciously that he will not abandon us if we turn back to him. Lord Jesus, please search out my heart and put the desires, goal, and intents of my heart in the proper order so that I can truly worship you.
