What do you see when you look up at the sky? Simple question with simple answers. Might be brilliant colors, various shapes of clouds, clouds that tell us what the weather might be, heavenly bodies, maybe a flock of birds. In fact, all of these things can happen at the same time. My dad, a WW2 vet, used to look up and say one of two things, depending on the clouds; “It’s a good day for bombing.” I think that usually referred to thick, gray clouds that concealed the bombers until they were right on top of the intended target. The complete opposite was; “Maybe today.” Glorious, billowing clouds focused his attention on the imminent return of the King!
What I see when I look up is the first verse of Chapter 19. This amazing declaration of God’s glory and what, without language, the heavens are saying. Are they not screaming at us that God is revealing himself in all his glory to all of mankind? The verse tells us that the heavens are making a clear declaration. God is glorious!
It’s interesting that the word “declare” can mean to score or tally or keep a record. Isn’t this just one glimpse of the glory of God. It may be the first thing we see in the morning and we can “tally” God’s glory number 1 today — the heavens. Then we can decide what’s next … where will we see the glory of God … how will it be expressed?
One of my sons recently sent me a picture of the morning sky in all its glory that he took out the window of the car in eastern Washington state. Psalm 19 instantly came to mind. So, I started penning a song; “Looking out the window at the majesty of God…”. Haven’t completed it. Hard to get past just that idea, but I will. What are you seeing?
Wherever you look – you can see God’s glory!
