All of us have probably experienced overwhelming, mind-numbing fear at some point in our lives. In this we can possibly identify with Moses as he faced God for the first time. As God began to reveal himself to Moses in the burning bush, Moses' fear was so overpowering he "was afraid to look at God" (v. 2). Yet, as Moses' relationship with God grew, he developed an intimacy in which he spoke with God "face to face" as a man speaks with his friend (33:11).
Many people, even Christians, are afraid to approach God in prayer because of their misunderstanding of his nature and character. Jesus said, "I no longer call you servants. ... Instead I have called you friends" (John 15:15). The nature and character of God is one of love in which he desires to have a relationship with us, and of which we do not need to avoid approaching him out of fear.
Lord, it is by your grace, mercy and love I am able to approach you this day. May I not only walk in this assurance but share this love and confidence with all in whom I come into contact.
