Kinsman-redeemer (go'el)
Monday, April 23, 2018

Ruth 4
Boaz now proceeds to redeem the family property by approaching the 'closer' relative and giving him the opportunity of redemption.

However, I want to focus here on our redemption from sin. Christ as our redeemer would need to be a kinsman. Since we are referred to as sons (and daughters) of God (John 1:12, Romans 8:14, 1 John 3:1-2), Christ, being the Son of God, is our elder brother and therefore our kinsman-redeemer.

Studies show go'el as a 'next of kin' who has the right to take on whatever need may have overwhelmed his kinsman or kinswoman. As we see here 'redeemer' but can also be 'avenger' (exacting the vengeance for a crime). We see both in Christ - his redemption for us by the shedding of his blood, as well as his avenging side in defeating the enemy. We are assured of his avenging side in Romans 12:19, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."

Romans 12:18, 21: "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men." "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good."
