Exodus 18:1-5
Sometime between Moses' journey back to Egypt (Ex. 4) and the events of Ex. 18, Moses sent his wife and children back to Midian to live with Jethro, his father-in-law, perhaps for their protection. We don't know the length of this separation, but Moses was certainly glad to be with his family again.

God has called his people through the ages to give up being with family members for a time in order to accomplish his work, something my wife and I experienced as missionaries. Paul spoke of the call to remain unmarried to serve the Lord without distractions (1 Corinthians 7:24-35). Jesus said that anyone who loves his family more than him is not worthy of the kingdom of God (Matthew 10:37). He also said that great rewards are reserved for those who are willing to give up time with family members for his sake. Are we willing, if God so calls, to leave our loved ones to serve him in a different job or country?

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life (Matt. 19:29 NIV).
