Along with the word "liar," the word "fool" was forbidden in our household. The psalmist David himself might have been scolded if he had said those words in Mamma's presence. (But she didn't mind "fool-ISH"!)
My grandson is a puppeteer and puppet-maker who had an understanding with someone who agreed to market his products online via social media. After a long, long wait with no offers to buy or sell, my grandson wailed online: "Will ANYBODY buy them EVER!?" He was sore distressed.
Oftentimes, David was like that, venting when he was sore distressed. He displayed that in today's psalm that he sent to one of his chief musicians. He complained about the fool who said there's no God. Furthermore, there was corruption along with abominable deeds. In other words, he pronounced that NOBODY did any good, no, not one. Finally, he declared that those workers of iniquity eat up people just as if they were eating bread instead of calling on the LORD. Then, as was David's familiar pattern, he recalled that the Lord is with the righteous! He prayed for his people that were in captivity and ended with his typical upbeat rejoicing in the Lord.
Father, we are all foolish at times. People disappoint and fail us. Our faith in your promises wanes. But I thank you that you are a righteous God, our refuge when foolish ungodliness threatens to triumph over us.
