The whole earth at this time spoke one language. Noah's descendants multiplied after the flood; they settled at Shinar. There they built a tower to reach God. To them, this would represent their strength; they would be powerful without God's help. They did not need God; they would fill his role. God did not like the pride and arrogance in the hearts of the people. God caused the people to suddenly speak different languages and scattered them far and wide on the earth so they could not communicate and work together to build the tower. The name of the tower was Babel.
When we boast today of our achievements, of what we have done, not giving God the glory and honor, we are saying that we are powerful like God and do not need him; we can do it on our own.
We read in the bible of Herod who "put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. And the people were shouting, 'The voice of a god, and not of a man!' Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory," (Acts 12: 20-23).
A boastful heart is not right with God.
