How to Stay Safe

Leviticus 26:1-15
In an age of terror and fear, how do we understand what it is to be the people of God? It is to follow him and trust him for our peace and prosperity. God promised the Israelites that he would care for them if they did not worship idols, if they walked in his laws and observed his commandments. He promised to protect them, to keep them free and to dwell with them.

God also promised in verses 14-16 of our passage that the penalty for disobedience would be, among other things, panic! And this was true. The more disobedient Israel became, the more fearful it became, and the more it tried to manage things, to make vain alliances with other protectors and to compromise who God had called it to be.

We as God's people have not been given a spirit of fear. If we will walk faithfully and obediently according to the values of his kingdom, we have nothing to fear. Bowing to any idols, whether pleasure, comfort or security, will only bring destruction, and no management efforts on our part will be successful.

Lord, I trust you alone for my safety, security and joy!
