REMEMBER!
Monday, March 1, 2021
I freely confess to being an avid “Star Trek” fan (a “Trekkie”). I think that one of the most memorable scenes in the Star Trek “universe” is the one near the end of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” in which Spock mind-melds with McCoy and says, “Remember!” That one-word line sets up the entire plot of the next movie (“Star Trek III: The Search for Spock”).

David used the word “Remember!” three times in Psalm 25:6–7, asking the Lord to 1) “remember” his own mercy; 2) “remember not” David’s previous sins; and 3) “remember me.” In the Bible, asking God to “remember” something (or someone) doesn’t mean to “carry” that thing (or person) around “in his head” (like McCoy did with Spock’s katra); it means to “take action” — to intervene — to do something about the thing (or person). David wanted the Lord to treat him with mercy, to refrain from punishing him for his sins, and (most of all) to bring something “good” out of the difficult situation that he was in when he wrote the psalm.

What would you ask the Lord to “remember” if you could “mind-meld” with him right now? (By the way: you can! It’s called “prayer.”)
