David had been busy building his own living quarters, his family, as well as getting the army and kingdom organized. Somehow, somewhere he was able to peruse the early Scriptures and he discovered the details of how the ark was to be moved — with poles carried by the members of the priestly family. It was to be treated in a holy manner — not touched by hands. It was, after all, the dwelling place of God. So then David gave instructions and preparations for a great celebration, a festive parade with sacrifices to the God of Israel. Many people accompanied the ark on the trek to Jerusalem. This time it was accomplished — because it was done under God’s direction, in the proper manner.
We do well to remember that many things in life will be accomplished when they are done in a godly manner. The motive is important, but so is the godly preparation. Prayer and appropriate scriptures are some of our “guidelines” for developing godly practices. “What would Jesus do” may still be one of our important meditational thoughts.
David took time to simply praise the Lord for his wonderful goodness, and not just because of this single event — it was because all the wonders, all the ages gone by, had all shown his steadfast love and faithfulness. Similarly, when our plans go awry as well as when they go “rightly,” we do well to pause and praise the Lord for who he is, and all the wonderful things he has done, thru the ages as well as in our own lives. It helps keep the right perspective on ourselves, our plans and our motives.
Lord God, help me today to listen to you as I walk through the day. Thank you for your steadfast love and powerful wisdom.
