"Keep My Commandments"

Obedience to God's commandments is a theme that flows throughout the Bible. In the Old Testament, the Israelites failed miserably at this time and time again. In the New Testament, the Pharisees and religious leaders added to the commandments, making them impossible for anyone to keep. And Jesus clarified the commandments by summarizing them thusly: "The most important commandment is this: 'Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' The second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself' " (Mark 12:29-31).
Before dying, David instructed his son Solomon that if he followed God's laws he would be successful and that God would keep the promise he made David. "If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel" (1 Kings 2:4).
For David, obeying God's commandments meant success and life - life of his reign. For us, obeying God's commandments still means success and life - eternal life.
"Keep the commandments and keep your life; despising them leads to death" (Proverbs 19:16).
