A new generation of Israelites was ready to cross into the Promised Land. Most of them had been born in the wilderness, where their parents had died because of unfaithfulness. There were few who were old enough to remember the crossing of the Red Sea, so Jehovah gives them a "parting of the waters" their generation can experience. He also wants to show them that Joshua is to be for them what Moses was for their ancestors - God's representative.
The Jordan River is normally a placid stream, but this is spring, and it is in full flood stage. Joshua tells them that when they see the waters of the river part so they can cross on dry ground, they will know that the God who could do such miracles will give them victory over their enemies (vv. 10-13).
It is important for us to share the stories of how the Lord has worked in our lives with our children and grandchildren, so that they can be encouraged to trust God and see him at work in their own lives. Then they will know that the God who did miracles in the past is still doing them today.
" ... Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me (Psalm 71:18b NLT).
