It is often said that the seven last words of the church are, "We've never done it that way before." But there is another response to ideas that I have had for which our text is a cure. "We tried that before, it didn't work." How many programs have we tried, ministries have we tackled, efforts we have undertaken to no apparent effect.
God graciously tells Joshua, "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." God blesses their efforts with success because they have learned from their mistakes. We need to learn from ours as well. Did we attempt something in our own strength, without earnest prayer? Did we give it a half-hearted try? Did we ram something down the church's throat? Did we cut corners or skip steps? Were we in rebellion in some other area, and looking for God's blessing anyway?
I have made all these mistakes at one time or another. But God is as gracious to you and me as to Joshua. There are many victories ahead of us. Not because we are so great but because the One who calls us enables and encourages.
"Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."
