We see here Naomi's knowledge of the law and her wisdom in directing Ruth in obtaining favor with Boaz. We must credit Ruth for obeying Naomi's counsel. My studying shows that laying at his feet may have meant higher in the body and perhaps when Boaz was startled awake from what one may think was a drunken stupor, he was unsure what had taken place between them. Ruth makes it known that he had the kinsman-redeemer rights (study suggests this was a proposal of marriage) and he accepts this by covering her with the blanket, a symbol of entering a marriage relationship. Thus through this union, Naomi would have the ability to reclaim (redeem) any lands sold off by her husband when they left for Moab.
Family properties could not be permanently sold, but once bought would have to be "redeemed" by a relative who was willing to pay off the debt and assume the responsibilities that came with the land. In this instance it would require giving Ruth a son that would be considered the heir to her dead husband's land.
Young people, do not ignore the wise counsel of your elders.
