When God demonstrates his power he gets everybody's attention. So it was that the people "trembled with fear" at the sights and sounds at Mt. Sinai that day. However, God was doing more than seeking their attention. He was getting them ready to live by a new system of law that would demand their diligent obedience.
It's possible to be deeply impressed by God's revelation of himself, whether by demonstrations in the natural world or by the written word, and still not allow it to affect one's life-style and ethical standards. In this case, Moses explained that God wasn't just "showing off" some of the things he can do. He was testing his people so they would have a holy fear of him that would keep them from sinning by disobeying his word.
God is mighty in power and majesty. We should not be afraid of him and hang back. We should love him, trust him and serve him obediently. We can do this through saving faith in Jesus Christ his Son.
Thank you, Father, for the inviting promise, "Come near to God and he will come near to you" (James 4:8). Please help me to walk close to you today. In Jesus' name, amen.
