Something Better

This is a wonderful account of God's abiding presence, seen in the pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day. They could see that God was with them, leading them. We might understandably be jealous and wish that we could have the same experience of fire and cloud. Sometimes God seems far away. Sometimes we don't know what he wants. It's easy for us to want to "go back to Egypt," where it was hard, but it's what we know.
However, we have two things far better than a pillar of fire or cloud. First of all, we have the Word of God, "a lamp to [our] feet and a light to [our] path" (Psalm 119:105). In it we read the redemption story of Jesus and the promises of God's love and active working in our lives. We have hope and guidance from our Father God from what we read in Scripture. Second, we have the marvelous gift of the Holy Spirit, God with us and within us! The Holy Spirit guides, prompts, encourages and convicts us, through the Word and in our hearts. Praise God!
Father, thank you for your marvelous gifts!
