Moses retold his need to share the responsibility for leadership of the people of Israel. He directed the people to pick for themselves "wise and discerning and experienced men" from their tribes. These leaders were to handle the day-to-day administration of justice for the people. No matter the station in life of the people who came before these leaders, the leaders were to not fear man, but remember that they were administering God's judgment for the people.
The leadership of our churches today should have the same characteristics, "wise and discerning and experienced." The attributes Paul provided for elders and deacons in the church are very similar (see 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:6-9; 1 Timothy 3:8-13). The challenge for people in these positions is to remember that they, too, are subject to the same temptations as everyone else and at the same time to humbly offer spiritual leadership to those in need.
Pray for the leaders in your church. Pray that they seek God's heart in all that they do. Pray that their leadership will bring others to salvation through Jesus.
