Job's three "friends" have been giving him advice about what he needs to do to get back into God's grace. As we know, Job was not being punished because of his wrongdoing; he was truly a man of God. If we read these verses out of context we would agree with what Zophar, the last of Job's three friends said. Certainly, there is little we could say was wrong, but, for Job, all of it was wrong. This advice simply did not apply.
Are we guilty of jumping to conclusions about other people's problems, fears or illnesses? Do we give advice without having any real understanding of their needs? Are others who are hurting even more hurt by our attempts to help? Let us pray not!
We must listen fully to others, pray for wisdom, and not rush to judgment when others have needs. I read a book recently about a wife whose husband was hospitalized with a brain tumor. She said that of all the prayers, visits, advice, etc., that was given, the things that meant the most were lattes and hugs!
Father, open our eyes to the needs of others. Fill us with love and kindness. Help us to listen more and judge less.
