Tragic Grief

What a contrast from yesterday's reading where we shared in Zechariah's joy at the birth of his son who would become John the Baptist. Today, we are grieved at the tragic death of Israel's first king, Saul. His sons were also slain and Saul's head chopped off and put on gory display at the Philistine's temple to their god Dagon. Verse 13 tells us why this tragedy befell Saul: "Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the Word of the Lord and even consulted a Medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the Lord" (NIV). What a tragic lesson to learn by rejecting the Lord and trying to take matters in your own hands.
Lord, forgive my unfaithfulness, may I always inquire of you and help me follow your Word.
