The Name of the LORD
Tuesday, April 26, 2016

God teaches by analogies, similes and metaphors. Proverbs is full of such of these figures of speech from which we can gain insight into the will of God. Today's text is a series of pictures that contrast the actions and attitudes of the godly and the ungodly.

Focus on verses 10 and 11. The picture is of a city surrounded by a protecting high wall. The forces of the enemy come against the city, but the strength of the wall keeps those inside safe and secure. Strong towers were at strategic parts of the wall to provide extra protection as well as places to fight off the enemy.

The person who trusts in God, in the name of the LORD, is like one who takes refuge in a strong tower. There is safety in this tower. There is opportunity to fend off the attacks of the enemy.

The wealthy man is different. He trusts in his riches as the people of a city trust in their high walls and strong towers. The rich man believes his wealth will protect him from all of his enemies. No matter what the attack, he believes if he throws enough money at the enemy, he will continue to be safe. Unfortunately, the rich man's protection is only in his imagination, his conceit. He just thinks he is protected by his money.

"Some boast (trust) in chariots and some in horses, but we will boast in the name of the LORD, our God" (Psalm 20:7).
