Respecting the Mountain

Penny and I regularly pack up our tarp, poles and backpacks and head out to the mountains for some time away from it all. But we have learned to be very careful on our hikes, because although these mountains are beautiful and majestic, they are also quite dangerous. One slip a few months ago, and now I feel the reminder of that mistake every time I lie on my right side!
Mount Sinai serves to transition the reader of Exodus from the theme of deliverance by grace to the theme of sanctification. The mountain is a dangerous place and should not be treated casually. God is there, and he is to be feared. Unlike the gods of Egypt that the Israelites were accustomed to, the Lord's power is not a show for entertainment. He will not be trifled with. It is time for God's people to take him seriously. The lessons God's people learn in Exodus are about God's power. He has power to save them (as they saw in Egypt), but his power can also judge them.
Lord, teach us how to respect your holy presence.
