Job knew that he couldn’t hide anything from God. Everything about him was in full view of the “Almighty on high” (v. 2). This tremendous, but intimidating, truth led Job to say in verse 4, “Does he not see my ways and count my every step?” Yet Job went one step further by inviting God to examine him. Job deeply loved God and always sought to live righteously before him (vv. 5-8). Therefore, he placed his trust in the close scrutiny of a holy God — even though he was questioning the trials he was going through.

How about us? Do we truly live holy lives before God? What about our actions: would they pass the test if God closely scrutinized the things that we do? These are serious questions and ones that we must face if we are to live in a way that pleases God. Thankfully, God has given us his Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is in us to make us into the image of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As we invite the Spirit to fill us, he will renew us and help us to live holy and righteous lives.

“You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming” (2 Peter 3:11-12).
