Chapter 8 of the book of 1 Kings is concerned with the dedication of the temple that Solomon had built in Jerusalem. The title for this section in the "Jerusalem Bible" is Solomon's prayer for himself and his prayer includes three elements:
1. The uniqueness and power of our God: "Not in heaven above nor on earth beneath is there such a God as you," 2. God's promises: "You have kept the promise you made to your servant David, my father (that there should always be a man of his line to sit on the throne of Israel)," and 3. Solomon's request: "Day and night let your eyes watch over this house."
This can be the pattern for our own prayers - recognition of the greatness of God, recall of the promises of God, and requesting our needs from God - "Whatever you ask for in my name I will do" (John 14:13).
