Have you ever wondered what it would be like if someone said to you, "What do you want? Ask and I will give it to you?" Good news! Someone already has asked you. God wants to know what you want.
Repeatedly throughout the Gospels we are told by Jesus to ask whatever we want. Jesus said, "But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!" (John 15:7) God desires to give us what we want. BUT he will not grant requests born from sin.
"When your motivation for wanting his blessing isn't to go chasing after sin with it, but rather to find your joy in the only place where true, lasting joy can be found, the possibility of receiving your best 'whatever' wishes opens up for you. With stunning regularity" ("The Battle Plan for Prayer").
In today's Scripture God asked Solomon what he wanted. Solomon's request was not born out of sinful desire but a desire to please God.
Oh God, may we be like Solomon when making our desires known to you. May our requests please you and not serve to satisfy our own sinfulness.
