Obadiah feared the Lord from his youth. He believed and trusted in God enough to do the right thing by hiding the prophets of the Lord from Queen Jezebel. He preserved their lives at the risk of his own. Yet on this occasion, he is fearful of losing his life by reporting Elijah’s whereabouts to King Ahab. He was afraid that Elijah would disappear and that he would be left “holding the bag.” Elijah reassured Obadiah by promising that he would indeed show himself to the king that day.
Courage and fear wrapped up in the same individual. Can you relate to that? Isn’t it funny how we can step out in faith in one area and then fail miserably in another? God’s Word can help us in our weakness. It offers us reassurance just as Elijah did for Obadiah. God has promised to be with us, uphold us, help us and provide for us. We don’t have to give in to fear!
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness” (Isaiah 41:10).
