The Blessed Man ... shall be like a tree, planted by the rivers of waters.
Have you ever taken a few moments to carefully look at a strong, stately tree - one that spreads out its branches in all directions? With its own calm strength, it dominates the entire landscape. That tree cannot be ignored, as it peacefully stands there, mighty and tall, becoming the central figure in the whole scene. In biblical times, people saw the cedars of Lebanon in that manner.
Perhaps the Psalmist was thinking of those mighty trees when he compared them to a person who was blessed of God. Like those trees, that blessed person has roots deeply digging into the fertile soil of God's Word, and is constantly being spiritually nourished, as he remains close to the ever-flowing river of God's grace and fullness. With a strong faith, standing firm amid the changing winds of doctrine and culture, he is able to give protection, inspiration and leadership to all who gather under his far-reaching arms of strength. Through such a person, all are blessed.
Oh, Lord, help me to be one who stands firm and tall for you, just like a mighty tree, in these days of turmoil and trial.
