Reflect organization

Customer Focus:

Expanding programs to support student mental health

Jared Fenton

At Hyperion Bank, supporting organizations that strengthen our communities is at the heart of what we do. One organization making a meaningful difference is The Reflect Organization, a nonprofit dedicated to helping higher education students build supportive communities and address mental health and wellness challenges together.

Reflect’s story began at the University of Pennsylvania, where founder Jared Fenton noticed that many students were quietly struggling. What started as simple conversations with and among students has grown into a nationally recognized nonprofit that equips college and higher education students to foster cultures of openness, connection and mutual support on their campuses.

Under the leadership of Executive Director SJ Kounoupis, Reflect works with colleges and universities to help students lead peer-led, evidence-based programs focused on wellbeing, authenticity and community. Within these, students can talk openly about their experiences and learn how to support one another.

Gaining recognition

Reflect’s program model was recently named as a Best Practice for Mental Wellness in Higher Education by The Pennsylvania Department of Education, and has been invited as one of a select few industry-leading vendors to present at the state’s upcoming PA EmpowerU convening in Harrisburg in April.

Reflect is also preparing to launch an expanded version of its Summer Fellowship program that will bring together students from multiple colleges to become wellness leaders on their campuses. Through the Fellowship, students will collaborate on social impact projects designed to strengthen community and promote a culture of mental wellness on campus.

“Reflect is committed to finding new ways to make our work accessible to as many students as possible,” Kounoupis says. “We’ve rallied our donors and supporters to ensure that budget challenges in higher education don’t have to be the end of our conversation with new partner schools. Students want to support each other, but they often don’t feel like they have the tools or the structure to know how to do it; our programs empower students to lead those conversations and create communities where their peers feel seen and supported.”

Hyperion Bank is proud to support Reflect and its mission, and we look forward to seeing the organization continue to grow its impact on campuses nationwide. As Reflect expands its programs and partnerships, the organization remains focused on its core goal: helping students build communities where no one has to struggle alone.

  • Visit Reflect’s website to explore its campus programs and impact.
  • Follow Reflect on LinkedIn and Instagram, and share its work with others.
  • Donations make fellowships and campus initiatives accessible to students nationwide.
  • If you have connections to colleges or universities, introductions can help Reflect bring programs to new schools & more students, reach out.

Women’s History Month: Women in and around banking

Maggie Lena Walker

March is Women’s History Month, celebrating both past and present contributions by women. It’s an opportunity to learn more about women who have made and are making an impact on Atlanta, Philadelphia…and the world. We thought we would mark the occasion by noting milestones by and for women in and around banking:

  • 1862: California became the first state to allow women to open bank accounts.
  • 1875: Louise M. Weiser became the first woman president of an American bank (Winnesheik County Bank, Iowa).
  • 1903: Maggie Lena Walker (pictured), a pioneering African American businesswoman, became the first woman to charter a bank (St. Luke's Penny Savings Bank, Richmond, VA).
  • 1974: The Equal Credit Opportunity Act revolutionized women’s financial independence by prohibiting gender- and marital-status discrimination in lending; it enabled women to obtain credit cards, mortgages and business loans without a male co-signer, effectively dismantling practices where lenders discounted women’s income.
  • 1975: First Women’s Bank opened in New York City, focusing on financial education for women.
  • 2021: Janet Yellen became the first woman U.S. Treasury Secretary.

New Online Banking Experience Is on the Way...

We’re excited to share that an upgraded online banking platform is coming soon.

The new system will make it easier to manage your accounts from your computer, tablet or phone, with a simpler design, improved security features, and new tools to help you stay on top of your finances. Plus, consumer and business customers will use the same robust app, with everything in one place.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll share more details about what to expect and how to get started. We’ll make sure you have plenty of notice and helpful guidance so the transition is smooth and easy once we reach the early summer deployment together.

We think you’ll really like the improvements. (They're what you have been asking for!) Stay tuned for more information soon.

Credit Education Month:

Protect credit, identity throughout the year

Credit Protection

March is National Credit Education Month, and for our clients, credit isn't just about borrowing – it's a tool for portfolio management. To maintain your high credit score – which optimizes bridge loans, investment property financing and more – keep these tips in mind:

  • Regularly review your credit report for unauthorized accounts so you’ll be less likely to fall victim to identity theft.
  • Optimize debt ratios, keeping utilization low, but strategically manage large, short-term debt for investment opportunities.
  • Monitor joint accounts, ensuring authorized users are not affecting your overall score.

Speak with one of our relationship bankers today to discuss your credit portfolio and other personal and business banking needs.

We celebrated quarterly birthdays and service anniversaries recently at Hyperion’s Philadelphia banking office. A spread from Chickie’s & Pete’s was lunch, with donuts from L&M Bakery, and a King Cake, in keeping with a festive Fat Tuesday theme (the authentic King Cake came directly from New Orleans!). Congratulations to our two winners – team members James Kang (shown above, right) and Ryan Elliott both got slices with the little baby inside. The Mardi Gras tradition: a person who randomly gets a King Cake slice with the baby inside is King or Queen for the day or has to buy the next King Cake or will have luck & success. The symbolism was originally religious, reflecting the Epiphany/Three Kings Day, and the “baby” was represented by a coin, bean or nut. In the 1940s a small plastic baby became the popular in-cake surprise, and that’s now become standard. It’s always great to celebrate with and for our team!
