Ski Season 2023 - It's a Wrap!

Lodge closing Sunday April 2 - get your wax on!

... Storage wax that is! The lodge will officially close for the season at 5:00pm on this date so please plan ahead and stop by during our regular hours if you want to take advantage of our wax benches and irons (bring your own wax). For skate skiers who want to stretch the season a little longer (trails still open), you can wax prior to our Spring General Meeting (see below). Overall it's been a pretty good snow year and we hope everyone has enjoyed their XC skiing at Wapiti Nordic this year!

Spring General Meeting - Sunday April 23rd @ 1pm

Watch for a seperate e-blast in the coming week with an agenda and call for nominees to our volunteer Board of Directors. The meeting will be held on Sunday, April 23rd at 1:00pm with a winter volunteer appreciation social immediately afterwards. The lodge will be open from 11:00am onwards that day for last minute storage wax application. We had an excellent turn out at the Fall GM and need engaged members to keep the club energized!

Farewell Dallal - our Operations Coordinator

The Club was sad to see Dallal depart on March 19th but we wish her well in her next endeavor at the Philip J Currie museum. As our inaugural Operations Coordinator, Dallal brought creativity, new processes and programs to the Club along with a passion for people and family activities. She was integral in the Club's ability to respond and meet the public's post pandemic demand for outdoor activities and took pressure off volunteers who were managing these responsibiltiies previously. The Board will be evaluating and tweaking the role before posting the opportunity later this Spring. Stay tuned!

Casino Volunteers Needed - July 4 & 5, 2023

Every three years, Wapiti Nordic gets the opportunity to access casino funds that can bring up to $30,000 - $40,000 to help support Club operations and help subsidize Club programs. But we couldn't do it without volunteers!! You can view open shifts and sign up here. It takes a village to keep our Club operating as we are 100% a not- for-profit society. Thanks a bunch!

Fundraiser + Social Opportunity!

Join us to help celebrate Wapiti Nordic's very own Liam Tinworth's recent achievements (2 Silvers + 1 Bronze at Canada Games and 1 Bronze + 3 x Top 10 finishes at Nationals) plus support his ongoing training efforts in Canmore. There are numerous ways to donate - Thank You in advance!

End of season for Bunnies & Jackrabbits

Our children's lesson program officially wrapped up on March 18th after another successful season. A massive shout out to volunteer Program Leader Daniel Martin and his dedicated team of volunteer parents who coordinate and run this very popular and integral program. It is key that we secure volunteers for next season's 2023-2024 program - if you are interested please reach out!

Congrats to

Aidan Armstrong!

Aiden took home the Male Athlete of the Year award at the recent Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection's 2023 Northwest Alberta Sports Excellence Awards! And his brother William has had quite a year too - read all about it here. Whatever they're having for breakfast is definitely working! Congrats guys!

Until Next Season Chicks!

The fun loving Chicks on Sticks brought their season to an end with a bang when they dressed up in their best Sunglasses and Shorts beach wear! Overall, the ladies had another great season with strong showings on Monday and Thursday evenings. Thanks also to the Chicks for helping to wax the rental room skis at the end of this season - what a fabulous bunch of positive gals!

Mukluks in the Making!

Three WNSC athletes attended the recent Wood Buffalo Arctic Winter Games competing in a sport that is not often seen, Snowshoe Biathlon. Along with preparing the athletes, the team had to source the traditional gear necessary to compete. Finding footwear that did not include any synthetic materials was the biggest challenge. Mukluk kits were eventually sourced in Ontario. Next came the real test ... finding someone to assemble and sew the pieces! A huge shout out goes to two local ladies who came to the rescue, doing a remarkable job in a very short time. The Club biathlon program and Team Alberta North want to recognize Janis Steinke and Gail Schau who saved the day and sent our athletes to the games in function and style!

Event Sub Committee - Help Wanted

Are you a planner that loves logistics and details? If so, we would love to have you help on our new subcommittee! It's a great way to give back and volunteer on a smaller scale. Email us today!

Dog Owners - Please pick up after your pets!

It is a perk to be able to walk or ski with your pet on Wapiti Nordic trails - please do not abuse this privilege. Dog poop does not evaporate! There are no magic dog poop fairies!! Plastic baggies are available on a roll at the gate. Volunteers should not have to go out and scoop up after others! If you witness someone's pooch offending, feel free to call them out on it - our Club deserves better!

Youth MTB Program is open - Adults soon!

It's officially time to switch gears into mountain bike mode! Our Youth MTB program is open for registration now - hurry spots will fill fast! Information on Adult programs including a social meet up will be released shortly. See you out on the trails!

Don't Get Lost in the Woods - Sept 10, 2023

Got Spring fever and planning your trail events? Remember to earmark this date for our annual trail run and walk event. Registration will open June 10th and updated information will be available here - check back in June.
