Vol 1 Issue 6

Art to Make You Laugh & Look at the World in a Different Way (Part1)

Clearly, ARABELLA is not your usual arts and culture magazine. We started the very first issue with an encouragement to our readers to live out loud each and every day, to be outrageous and have fun in everything you do. It started with our own small gallery – The Gallery Barn in Caledon, Ontario where our focus was to “Laugh and Look at the World in a Different Way”. This has been our mantra and one we personally believe is the real value of creative work. Those moments are precious and often offer solace from our day-to-day experiences.

Out of those gallery years we saw the value of living life in full colour and seeing how differently the world responds. The magazine became our journey to share the magic that often goes unnoticed. Along the way, we have shared special moments of exquisite beauty, dazzling colour, breath-taking pictures and compelling stories all designed to make you think and look at the world in a new way.

For this newsletter series we return to some past moments of laughter, amusement and poignant reflection. Not a small task for an arts & culture magazine but one that we have strived for in every issue. Enjoy!

With an empty barn on the Caledon farm and a desire to realize more of our artistic interests and talents, our rather eccentric seasonal Gallery Barn at ARABELLA Pines was launched with its signature Bird House Art exhibit. At its height we represented 23 artists, and it gave us an opportunity to experiment, refine and develop some successful approaches to branding. We like to think that our after-event-hours, martini celebrations with artists and neighbours were legendary. We knew we had one clear goal - to focus on creating, supporting and promoting art that makes you laugh and look at the world in a different way.

Art to Make You Laugh &

Maybe Look at the World in a Different Way

For Part 1 of this Newsletter Series we offer a few of the past articles that touched on looking at the possibilities, "What if?", the more amusing, and then those that completely break with tradition and provide a unique standalone perspective.

Patrick Meagher

Bronze sculptor Patrick Meagher loves getting his hands dirty. Unlike most metal sculptors, the British Columbia artist actually pours his own metal, giving him full reign over the process as well as a good understanding of the possibilities inherent in the material. His work has a certain amount of whimsy and levity, partly because he gives human qualities to inanimate objects.

Robert Bissell

Robert Bissell developed his unique style of allegorical animal paintings in the late 1990's. In 2012 he began to create paintings directly from his landscape photography discipline. Both genres of painting reflect the human condition and its relation to the natural world.

Linny D. Vine

The glint off the lake, the sun reflecting in a pane of glass, the beautiful vibrant colours making up the whimsical palette of Linnyland - this is a world halfway between imagination and creation, a world of beauty and harmony that is created the moment brush hits canvas. Welcome to the art of Linny D. Vine. "Life is my inspiration," says Linny, "Colour, contrast, patterns, light, quirkiness, warm colors, vibrant colors, patterns of colors.

Don Stewart

The Hidden Pictures That Shape Us. Just as a single drop of ink can spawn a drawing, so too can one event shape an entire life. Anyone who doubts this need look no further than Don Stewart for an exemplar.

Angie Rees

Angie Rees lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. Although she has painted her whole life she sought formal training from Grant MacEwan College and the University of Alberta where she graduated with a BFA in 1990. Her painting style is whimsical, playful and eccentric. Her imaginative works are extremely well crafted with rich surface textures and a vibrant, arresting palette. The wit and humor of her clever titles add another dimension to these “visual puns.”

Henry Fernandes

Henry Fernandes grew up in Spanish Harlem in New York City and graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 1965. An accomplished animation designer and illustrator, he has recently turned his talent towards painting in Buckhorn, Ontario. Speaking about the influences of his work, Henry said, “There were no flower gardens in Spanish Harlem where I grew up, but there was imagination. And learning to be acutely aware of my surroundings as a survival skill has become a useful part of my painting process. I am always looking very carefully at the world around me. Even though I now live beside a lake in southern Ontario, I still paint ‘inner landscapes."
