David Blakely

Former SLO Supervisor,

son of LTC Everett Blakely

Wednesday March 6

No Host Bar: 5:30 p.m., Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.

You don't want to miss this dinner! Former San Luis Obispo County Supervisor David Blakely will present a discussion about the changes and the implementation of air war strategy during the early part of American bomber involvement in WW II.

David’s father, Lt. Col. Everett Blakely (pictured above), was an early B-17 pilot in World War II. This presentation will focus on the 100th Bomb Group (The Bloody Hundredth) and the missions flown by Lt. Col. Blakely to explain the early bomber strategy developed to win the war against Nazi Germany.

Following in the genre of “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific”, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg produced on an Apple TV a mini series entitled “Masters of the Air”. This series focuses on the 100th Bomb Group in World War II. Actor David Shields will be playing the role of Major Blakely in this nine-episode series.

Dinners are catered and open to the public ($25/person), and reservations are required prior to 6 p.m., Monday prior to dinner, either On-line HERE or call 805 296-1935.

Update - Firebase Lightning

firebaselightning image

Our M-101 howitzer and Willy's Jeep, pictured above have disappeared but will be returning as part of a Korean War firebase called "Firebase Lightning". The two artifacts are currently undergoing a "refreshment" phase (or refinishing). If you stopped by the museum and not seen them, they have not vanished completely! This area will be updated to reflect a more "lived-in and used feel" that would be seen in a combat environment. We have already put up the foundation over the brick wall with corrugated aluminum and wood beams. Sandbags will be added to become a command post bunker with radio antennas and some barbed wire. It's been raining in Paso Robles, but it will be ready for spring.

Gary Corippo - Update

gary image

Last month we reported with great sadness the passing of Gary Corippo. Gary left this world peacefully on Monday, 1/29/24 surrounded by his family in Fresno, CA.

Gary was the co-founder of Estrella Warbirds Museum along with Glen Thomson. Gary was also a force of nature! No project was too big or hard or impossible when Gary got involved.

Gary was a great motivator and mentor to many of the volunteers, and for this writer, the memories will always be cherished.

On behalf of Estrella Warbirds Museum and the Corippo Family, we would like to formally announce that Gary Corippo's Celebration of Life will be on Wednesday, 6/5/24 in Hangar 1. Gary's Celebration of Life will take the place of our monthly dinner and generally coincide with the same time frame (5;30PM-8:00PM).

The Corippo family would like this to be an opportunity for those who knew him (or knew of him) to come out and spotlight what he did to make this museum become a success. There will be no keynote speaker that night, it will be Gary in the spotlight!

During the event, there will be an opportunity for the public to bid on some personal and historical artifacts that Gary owned, to help benefit the museum as well as allow you to keep a piece of Gary with you forever!

The Corippo Family will also be allowing Gary to buy your first adult beverage which they are generously paying for! The monthly dinner price will still apply to those attending.

More info will be forthcoming but expect to sign up for this event as you would for the monthly dinner.
