March 10, 2020

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is certainly the focus of many conversations these days, including here at the Chamber of Commerce.  Here's what we know:

COVID-19 was first identified in Wuhan, China, and reported by the World Health Organization on December 31, 2019. Around the globe, the Coronavirus is receiving heightened attention for infecting tens of thousands of people. The respiratory illness caused by a Coronavirus is thought to spread between people who are in close contact with one another (about six feet) through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land on common surfaces or in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby, or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

The Madison County Chamber of Commerce is tracking the impact of the Coronavirus for our businesses and the Madison County community. Below are resources for advice on how your business and family can plan for and respond to the virus.

Overview and Monitoring:

Updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracking the situation in the U.S. and the latest recommendations

March "Top 5 for Small Business" Series
Each month the Greater Des Moines Partnership hosts a "Top 5 Series" focused on helping business owners navigate different aspects of their business.  For March, the featured topic is "Top Five Ways to Prevent Fraud in Your Business", happening Wednesday, March 25.

Have you heard a recent report of fraud or embezzlement and wondered how the fraudster got away with it for so long or why no one caught them sooner? Small businesses don't always have the people and resources to put the proper checks and balances in place. As businesses grow, trust and delegation can cause the business owner to be less hands-on with their financials. This session will cover the most frequent small business frauds and five things you must understand to reduce the risk of fraud and loss in your business.

The event is from 11:30 am-1:00 pm at the Greater Des Moines Partnership offices. The cost is $15, which includes lunch, or $10 to watch via a live simulcast.  To register for the event, click here.
