Scotland’s Leadership Club Visits Caledonia to Pick Up Logs for Buddy Bench
Members of the Scotland Elementary Leadership Club and their  leaders Colleen Woy (Intervention Specialist) and Kelly Soltroff (3rd Grade) met at Caledonia State Park on Saturday, February 2.  Park rangers supplied two wooden logs to use for the club's buddy bench project to be installed on the Scotland Elementary playground.

“This buddy bench will serve as a place where a student(s) can go when he/she is feeling bullied at recess or in need of a friend to play with at recess. After the logs were loaded up on a pick-up truck and taken back to the school, the Leadership Club took a hike on a trail in Caledonia,” said Mrs. Soltroff.

Mrs. Woy led the group and explained various wildlife facts along the way. At the conclusion of the hike, they met back at the covered pavilion. There was a fire in the fireplace where the students and adults enjoyed toasting marshmallows and making s’mores.

“It was a terrific day of team work and comradery!” noted Mrs. Soltroff.

Research Project for Grandview Third Graders Ends Up Being Wax Museum

An animal research project for third graders at Grandview Elementary ended up being a Wax Museum for parents and visitors where students showcased their projects.

For their research project, students were able to choose an insect, bird, fish, reptile/amphibian, or mammal.  Students then spent several weeks researching and writing about their topic,”  explained Mrs. Beth Francisco, their teacher.  “Students used a rubric, they had a timeline, and they did all of the work at school.”

“Additional requirements included a habitat box to display food, a water source, shelter, predators, offspring, and vegetation; a map to display the animal’s habitat; and a diagram of the animal with labeled parts,”  said Mrs. Francisco.

For the actual Wax Museum, students also were asked to include a prop or they could dress up as their animal using a simple homemade costume.  On the day of the actual museum, all of the students gathered in the cafeteria with their reports, props, maps and diagrams to tell visitors about their topic.

This project was a part of the English Language Arts curriculum.

Zoo Review at Ben Chambers

Over 50 second graders at Ben Chambers recently held a Zoo Review for their parents.   Students got to choose an animal, research it, and they presented a Power Point presentation to their parents.

The librarian, Mrs. Hagerman, along with the second grade teachers helped the students research their animals on the website, Pebble Go.  Mrs. Hagerman handed out bookmarks to assist families in accessing websites at home.

Title I teachers invited a staff member from the Coyle Free Library, Sarah Applegate, to explain library programs available to our local families.  She also discussed the future of the library and  gave bookmarks and stickers to each child.

Jump Rope for Heart
Jump Rope for Heart was implemented in all elementary schools this year during the regularly scheduled physical education classes.

“Most schools had an assembly where American Heart representative Nicole Swansinger came to introduce the event, explain why we jump and where the donations go, and who we help with this fundraiser,” said Wendy Machemer, physical education teacher at Scotland.

“Thank you so much for all that you do to keep this event such a success year after year. You are making a difference in the lives of so many!  I cannot thank you all enough for your time and dedication to the mission! Not only are you helping to teach your students how to be heart healthy and provide them with lifelong learning, but you are raising lifesaving donations for those with heart disease!” said Nicole Swansinger.

Students collected donations either online or by check.  Depending on the amount of donations that they received, they earned thank you gifts.  This year’s theme was Super Pups.  We have been doing this national event  for many years.  Schools can choose to do it at any time;  most of us do it during February as that is Heart Month, explained Mrs. Machemer.
Faculty at Scotland Elementary participated in this year’s event.
