Spring is bringing a lot of energy to Nyack, with new opportunities and a full calendar of arts and events.
First, a reminder that the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list lottery is open. Because demand is so high, the waiting list is filled through a lottery system. Residents who think they may qualify are encouraged to apply before the deadline and to share the information with neighbors who might benefit.
Nyack’s creative community is also in the spotlight with the Nyack International Film Festival at Hotel Nyack. The festival features a wide range of independent films, including work from nearly two dozen local filmmakers. It’s a great chance to see new voices in filmmaking and support the arts scene that makes Nyack such a special place.
And on stage, Elmwood Playhouse is presenting The Book of Will, a lively and heartfelt story about the friends of William Shakespeare who worked to preserve his plays after his death. It’s a powerful reminder of how art and storytelling endure through the dedication of passionate people.
We wanted to alert you to be aware of a wire-fraud scam that has been attempted in the Village. Someone got an email purporting to be from the Village Building Department and asking them to pay a fee via wire transfer. Please be careful about this or other scams:
First, the Village will NEVER ask you to pay a fee via online banking, wire transfer, or a service like PayPal, Venmo, etc. We accept payment in cash, check or on the Village website itself via credit card. If you get a request to pay any other way, be suspicious and check it out.
Second, you should generally be careful anytime someone asks you for money online:
- If you get an email with links that you weren’t expecting, be careful of clicking on the links until you’ve verified that the sender is from someone you trust.
- If you get links in an email and click on them, check the domain name to make sure it’s the organization you think it is.
- If you ever get a request for a wire transfer, double-check the information by phone with phone numbers you already have or can easily find online, not phone numbers in the email itself. Be REALLY careful of wire transfers.
We want you to be safe. For more information, you can go to the federal site about online scams and fraud.
As St. Patrick's Day approaches, I want to wish all who celebrate a joyful and safe celebration. Whether you’re enjoying music, gathering with family and friends, or simply wearing a bit of green, I hope the day brings a little extra luck and good cheer.
Have a great week!
