From Our Pastors
God is For You
“The Parable of the Golden Shawl”
(Romans 8:31-32)

If I didn’t talk to the dear woman personally I would have thought it was a nursery rhyme or fable written in the 18 century called The Golden Shawl . As she sat in my office and told her story she opened up like a flower before my very eyes.

As a woman in her early 60’s she decided two years ago to go to college to continue her education for the first time. As we talked about her two year journey she mentioned the fact that she would be graduating in a few weeks. I congratulated her and told her how happy I was for her and how she really accomplished a high goal for a woman in her 60’s.

She went on to tell me her story: She said as a young girl she was a high achieving learner with exemplary grades and honors. She dreamed through her teen years of a college degree and a budding career someday.

She had done her research regarding funding and scholarships and received a packet of information that required her father’s signature and financial information on forms to determine her scholarship status.

She was so excited to show her Father the forms to fill out as a first step to realizing her dreams.

He abruptly told her she didn’t need a college education because it was a waste of time and money. Furthermore he said “I’m not putting my personal information down on paper since it is nobody else’s business but my own.” And with a verbal stroke of denial he crushed his daughter’s dreams.

She went on to tell me that her whole life she always inwardly desired to go back to college someday but the responsibilities of life with a new family would prevent this from happening.

So now at this golden season of her life she would finally walk with cap, gown and diplomas in hand. But she wouldn’t walk alone.

She went on to say that something really interesting happened regarding the preparation for the graduation ceremony. She received a letter stating that she qualified to wear an additional tassel and golden shawl around her neck and shoulders for the ceremony. Both represented good grades, hard work and achievement. However, she said she had no idea or clear explanation that this would happen.

As we talked it became clear to both of us that although her earthly father would kick her dreams to the curb of life and would discourage her from pursuing her goals and dreams, her Father in heaven never took His eyes off the fact that this was a significant desire in her heart her entire life.

At this time in her life, the Lord would not only not only open the door and resources for her to realize her desires, but with great pride and applause would clothe with a golden shawl and braid of honor on top of it.

This is a picture of how of what Paul meant in Romans 8:31 when he said “God is for you”….

No doubt Paul is speaking primarily of salvation, payment of sin and the promise of eternal life, but he also is encouraging the suffering Christians in Rome at that time, that no matter what discouragement they received from their families regarding their new faith or what type of persecution they would experience at the hands of the Roman soldiers, Jesus would always be “for them.”

Notice Paul didn’t say “God might be for you or God could be there for you or God should be there for you but he said joyfully and emphatically “God IS for you.”

Look, your parents may have rejected you, your friends may have deserted you and your job may be done with you, but right about the time you feel like throwing in the towel of discouragement he wraps you with his righteousness, honor, and encouragement and whispers in your spirit again, I am for you!

Blessed be His gracious name forever and ever!!!!
