Mission Links Change the World

The Northern Illinois Conference and the Conference Board of Global Ministries celebrate the churches that went the extra mile as 100% Mission Links supporters. In 2025, NIC churches contributed over $383,700 in second-mile giving and more than $94,000 in Special Sunday offerings, supporting mission projects worldwide. Through Mission Links, churches empower communities by funding missionaries, disaster relief, education, health services, and more demonstrating the United Methodist commitment to transformative ministry.

DeKalb First UMC has begun to promote small group ministries. They began with Growing in Grace class for ages 40 – 59. Building on the success of that group, they are starting a group this fall for college-age young adults and twenty-somethings. Then the men of the church came up with the idea to form an Adventure Club for hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. Isn’t it great how one idea led to another and yet another? Keep up the good work, DeKalb!

Maple Park UMC has started a cooking club to help people in grief. The church realized that to start such a program the church kitchen would need two new stoves and without much fuss, two new stoves were procured. A great step out in faith for their community. The church is also starting up a community garden.

We would love to hear of your successes. Maybe your successful idea can help another church. What is your church’s story? Contact Karen Newby at bellskaren41@gmail.com with your story.

This month the DST has started praying for district churches and their pastors. The churches for March are Albany UMC, Amboy United First Church, Ashton UMC, Brookville UMC in Polo, Chana UMC, and Channahon UMC. We will be praying down the alphabet, so all churches in the district will be on our list as time goes on.

Share Your 'Why' Story

Rev. Christian Coon, NIC's director of congregational development, reflects on an early experience that continues to shape his faith. He urges clergy and laity to move beyond the “how” of evangelism and first reclaim the “why” by naming their own Jesus stories and the hope that anchors them. He invites clergy and lay leaders across the conference to share their own “Jesus stories,” asking why they first said yes to Christ. Read More

Join the NIC Council on Young People’s Ministry on Sat., April 18, as youth from across the conference travel together by bus to visit four different houses of worship. This interfaith experience is designed to foster learning, curiosity, and faithful conversation while building community among middle school and high school youth. The trip costs $20 which includes breakfast, lunch and transportation. Space is limited. Learn more.

Bishop's Appeal: Education for Central Conferences

The 2026 Bishop’s Appeal will benefit Education for Central Conferences, supporting two key initiatives: construction of a high school in Tanzania, led by NIC missionary Rev. Young Seon Kim (known as Christina), and the Endowment for Theological Education in the Central Conferences. This year’s appeal invites us to invest not only in classrooms and curriculum, but in futures, in young people’s discovering their gifts and in pastors and leaders who are equipped to guide communities with wisdom, compassion, and courage.

UMCOR Sunday, March 15

UMCOR Sunday seeks to increase awareness and support for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Gifts given on UMCOR Sunday play a vital role in enhancing the church's global humanitarian response because these funds cover UMCOR's administrative costs. This support ensures that 100% of donations given to UMCOR throughout the year can be directed toward on-the-ground relief and recovery efforts, allowing UMCOR to effectively respond to crises and provide assistance where it's needed most.

HOW TO GIVE: Write a check to your local church and write, “United Methodist UMCOR Sunday offering” in the memo line. Churches can give through the NIC Apportionment process. Learn more.

 HAPPENING AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Focus on youth mental health advocacy efforts and learn how to talk with children and youth. Experts at Rosecrance, NAMI, and Children’s Advocates for Change will share best practices and resources on how to be better advocates. Learn more.

Speak to Legislators about your faith on April 15

The NIC Committee on Religion and Race Legislative Action Committee is leading a trip to Springfield, where participants will talk with state legislators about racism and public policy, especially as it relates to environmental justice, immigration, and education.
