Updates from the Principal

Hybrid Updates
We have been on campus for 16 weeks without any reported cases of on-campus virus spread. This is a remarkable success story, but as we move forward into the Red Tier, we must be cautious and follow restrictions and guidelines.

Based on requests for additional in-person slots, more students will start on campus on Monday. As we accommodate these requests, we will work to create an equitable solution once class sizes become too large for a room. We will use our larger spaces and look into creating a rotation so all students have the opportunity to be in classrooms.

There is much to be optimistic about. Know that we are exploring every opportunity to create as much involvement as we can, to safely demonstrate the sisterhood and involvement that have been the hallmark of Carondelet. We have learned so much since the new school year began, and even more since we started back on campus in October. We have been able to offer more than we could have imagined at that time, and it is because of your partnership and cooperation. Thank you.

Kevin Cushing
Principal
Weekly COVID Testing Updates
We are adding weekly COVID testing on Mondays for our students and athletes. In order for athletes to compete, we need weekly testing in place. Once we begin “high-impact” sports, both indoor and outdoor, we may need to provide testing with more frequency than once a week. We have a company that can facilitate a 24-48 hour turnaround time, which will help us in advance of upcoming athletic competitions. As we roll this testing program out, we will of course provide more detail on the requirements.

The next upcoming test date is Wed. March 17 and is for students and employees only. Family members will not be allowed to schedule an appointment because it's a traditional school day, not a Flex Day. Appointments are required.
Schedule Reminders
We want to remind families that there is no Flex Day this week. Classes will meet Monday-Thursday with Fridays reserved as a Faculty/Staff professional development day.

The last two school days before Spring Break will be distance learning only. No students will come to campus on Monday, March 29, or Tuesday, March 30. This is to ensure that one cohort does not receive more on-campus time than another. Spring Break starts Wednesday, March 31 with classes resuming Monday, April 12.
Student Life Updates
Campus Ministry
Ven a Ver - Borderlands - Application due March 18 (jJuniors and Seniors may apply)

Applications are available for Ven a Ver Borderlands (formerly Ven a Ver San Diego)! This is a virtual, immersive exploratory in which we will participate in workshops from Borderlinks, an organization devoted to educating communities on immigration. This exploratory will meet from 2-4 PM on the following Flex Days: 4/14, 4/21, and 4/27.

Apply and learn more about the exploratory. Questions? Contact Ms. Miranda in Campus Ministry!

Deans and Attendance
We know that traveling is often a necessity and it is also a family decision. However, we do ask for families to partner with us to lessen the possibility of spreading the virus to campus. Effective immediately, there are currently no restrictions to return to campus for simply traveling out of the Bay Area (or the state or otherwise) as long as our students and families follow all Contra Costa County health and safety guidelines (wearing a mask, social distancing, etc.).

However, if a family has been out of town and has an interaction that would be defined as a close contact (within 6-feet for 15 minutes or longer), we ask that your daughter participate in a week of virtual learning at home upon return. Additionally, as with any close contact, we encourage you and your daughter to get a COVID test. Please be upfront with any travel arrangements and connect with Malisa Meemari or Caitlin Main if you have any questions or concerns about your daughter’s return to campus after travel.
Yearbook Request: Submit photos of your student
Yearbook needs your help collecting images of our incredible students! Please send us photos of students doing the following:
  • Sports (Carondelet or Club)
  • Working or volunteering
  • School at home
  • Siblings together attending Carondelet and/or De La Salle
Please submit them to us via our photo upload site or email them to us.

The submission deadline is tomorrow, March 15!
Season Updates
According to the CDPH, all in-season athletes and coaches must submit a negative COVID test, once every 14 days for purple tier sports (tennis, golf, swim, and dive) and once weekly for red tier sports (softball and lacrosse). High contact sports must test 24 hrs from each competition.

Carondelet will host testing every school week for the rest of the semester. SIGN UP HERE

For student-athletes and coaches only, we are opening Monday testing starting March 15 from 1:30-4:00 PM in the faculty/staff lounge. Review and fill out these forms. No appointment needed. We encourage all athletes to come to Monday testings for the fastest results.

Survey Coming
This was an unprecedented year of change. Throughout it, we embraced the Carondelet mission of responding to the needs of the times to make a positive difference. We monitored academic achievement and social-emotional needs of students with our MAP Growth Testing and Panorama SEL surveys.

Our campus improvement team reviews schoolwide survey results to address areas of strength and areas of growth. We sent student surveys in September, December, and March to measure the growth and effectiveness of our improvement action plans. These tools help us assess and modify our hybrid system.
Now, we are also looking for family-input. We want to better understand your experiences during these times. Your responses to the survey are confidential, no one at our school will see your individual responses.

Please look for an email from Panorama Education. The survey will be open all week starting on Monday, March 15, 2021. Please take a few minutes to let us know your experiences this year.
Carondelet Giving Day - March 16
We invite you to participate in our 24-hour campaign to support our students in a special way. This year we have many generous donors that are offering $1 match for every $1 donated, so all gifts will have 2x the impact! Our goal is 350+ donors, and the class with the highest participation will get a pizza celebration.

This past year has been challenging for all of us, and our largest fundraisers have been primarily virtual creating a shortfall in revenue. Consequently, your support matters now more than ever!
Happening Now
Urban Plunge Reimagined
With juniors unable to go on the annual Urban Plunge trip, a day usually spent volunteering at St. Anthony’s Foundation in San Francisco, the Symbols and Ethics classes instead explored local resources and heard from community partners to learn more about people experiencing homelessness in the East Bay.
Kids Against Hunger
Chloe Knowles '22 got involved with Kids Against Hunger (KAH) volunteering in elementary and middle school. Wanting to bring this experience with her to high school, she started and became president of a club on campus. Last weekend, the group helped package over 6,500 meals to send to Haiti. Get involved in KAH.
"Drive Thru" Fundraiser a Success!
The Parent Association is thankful for the community's support in this important fundraiser. Volunteers made the event possible, serving over 750 guests and raising $15K! The event funds Parent Association programs including hospitality for school-wide events, teacher appreciation, snacks for finals, senior activities, junior ring reception, and more.
College & Career Updates

Each week, your College & Career counselors will share updates for students and families about upcoming opportunities for your road to college. In this week's edition, here are some of the highlights:
Sophomores: College Counselors will meet with you Wednesday, March 24 from 9:30-11:00 AM. We will cover important college information including how to develop a list of colleges, how to research colleges, what to do when attending information sessions, and more. A Zoom link will be posted in Schoology and emailed to families.

Juniors: College & Career will have our annual College Kickstart program on June 1-4. During this application bootcamp, students will write the first draft of their college essay, begin their Common Application, create their activities list, narrow their college list, and more. It’s a week of hard work that reaps great rewards. Registration details will be emailed in the upcoming weeks.

Juniors: College Preview Night will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, April 21 at 6:30 PM. Mark your calendars! Hear from college admissions representatives about their different admissions processes, how admissions decisions are made, and review two sample applications as if you are part of an admissions committee. Details will be emailed to families closer to the date.
