Weekly Epistle
Fourth Sunday in Lent
March 14, 2021
Dear people of St Luke’s,

It was so good to resume our in-person services last weekend! I could feel the joy and energy filling the space at all 4 services. Despite wearing masks and keeping our distance, it was great to be together and to worship the Lord as the people of God. For me, having real people in front of me, not just the camera, made the services even more meaningful. I hope that those who followed the 10:00 am service on Facebook felt the joy that was present at St Luke’s.

We don’t know when we will be able to worship without restrictions, so we need to be patient. One day, soon, I hope, we will be able to gather together without reservations. One day, we will be able to greet each other by shaking hands or hugging. But, for now, it’s safer to follow the CDC and diocesan guidelines.

We now can have up to 95 people in the church and up to 50 people in the Parish Hall. Our most attended service is at 10:00 AM, but unfortunately, we can not accommodate everybody. So, please don’t hesitate to attend one of the other services. The 5:30 pm service in the Parish Hall on Saturday is a simple spoken Eucharist. The 8:00 am service in the Church is almost identical to the 10:00 am with music and cantors. The noon service in the Parish Hall is different from all the others: this is an informal and simplified contemporary service. No bulletin since the words are projected on a screen, and for the music we use recorded contemporary Christian music. All are welcome to test any of these services.

Palm Sunday and Holy Week will be slightly different this year. For instance, we won’t have the Liturgy of the Palms in the Gathering Hall or outside, rather the service will begin in the Church or the Parish Hall, we won’t have a congregational washing of feet on Maundy Thursday, and we won’t have the blessing of the fire outside the church for Easter Vigil. However, I’m certain that all these services will be beautiful and meaningful and will help us to prepare ourselves for the Joy of Easter.

Day by day, day by day, O, dear Lord, three things I pray: to see you more clearly, to love you more dearly, to follow you more nearly, day by day.

I’m keeping you and yours in my prayers.

Pierre-Henry

In-gathering for Self Denial Fund - Daughters of the King

“Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two…” Mark 6:6b-7a NRSV

Members of The Order of the Daughters of King ® have given generously since 1897! Because of their donations, the love of God has spread around the world through missions and missionaries.

“The Lily Funsten Ward Memorial Fund, known as the “Self Denial Fund,” was established by a resolution adopted at the fifth annual convention held in Washington, DC, in 1897. Miss Lily Funsten Ward, a Daughter of the King and a missionary in China, asked that a day be set aside for the celebration of Holy Communion with special intention for the church in China. In compliance with this request, it was resolved that a Self Denial Week be observed every year. At a subsequent convention held at Portland, Oregon, in September 1922, a resolution was adopted setting aside February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, as a special day for the ingathering of the Self Denial Fund. The Self Denial Fund supports missionaries and missions around the world. Self Denial Fund grants support missionaries and mission trips for both "Senior and Junior Daughters.”

This year the Daughters of the King will present their self-denial offering during the 10:00 am service this Sunday.

Readers Needed: St. Luke's Educational Scholarships

We are entering scholarship season when we, at St. Luke’s, award scholarships to two or three high school seniors in the Quad Cities Area. Students who will attend college or trade school are eligible. The applications for both types of schools are available online at St. Luke’s website and from each high school’s academic advisors or guidance counselors. The deadline for applications was Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at the Parish Office. Finalists will be interviewed in late April, and scholarship recipients will be announced at the 10:00 service on May 2, 2021.

The process of determining who will receive a scholarship depends on St. Luke’s volunteers who read and score the application materials and required essay. If you are reading this and think you would like to be a part of that process, we would welcome your involvement.  Just get in touch with Mary Hallford 602-796-1177 or mwhallford99@hotmail.com. Thank you for your interest.
