March 17 SCC offers free screening of The Flame: The Art and History of Lampworking

The 21st International Flameworking Conference (IFC) begins with a free showing of The Flame: The Art and History of Lampworking in Salem Community College’s Sol and Jean Davidow Performing Arts Theatre in Davidow Hall at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 17.

The Flame follows Eric Goldschmidt, the longtime Flameworking Supervisor for The Corning Museum of Glass, as he learns about the origins of his craft, known as lampworking and flameworking. In Murano, Italy, he engages with many of the world’s leading glass artists using the lampworking process. The Flame travels across lampworking history through the works, words, and memories of notable artists and scholars. The film is an InMurano production.

World-renowned artist and SCC Distinguished Alumnus Paul J. Stankard founded the IFC in 2001 to promote excellence to students. Today, Stankard is IFC chair emeritus and advises conference chair Kristin Deady, the College’s Assistant Dean of Glass Education.

Sponsored by the SCC Foundation, the conference is made possible by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, through the Salem County Board of Commissioners, and the Salem County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

For more information about the Friday evening program and the International Flameworking Conference, visit www.salemcc.edu/glass or email GlassEducationCenter@salemcc.edu.
