Sermon Series

Lenten Sermon Series: Metamorphosis
At the touch of Christ, lives change - spiritually, emotionally, physically and relationally. Sometimes our lives change quickly and sometimes slowly over time, but the difference is often striking. With that in mind, during the Sundays of Lent and Easter, we will be preaching from the miracles of Jesus, culminating in the difference the cross and the resurrection makes for us personally and for the whole world. The goal of this series is for each of us to have a metamorphosis of our own...so that we become witnesses of Christ's life-changing power.  Metamorphosis  will be a series you won't want to miss!

Sermon: "New Name - New Story!"
Scripture:   Luke 8:26-39

Dr. Will Cotton will preach at the 8:30 and 9:40 am worship services. Robin Levins, First Church member and frequent writer of The Source , will preach at the 11 am service. His sermon title is " When Life Gives You Legions."

Words from Will...
Associate Pastor Appointments to be Announced
On this Sunday, March 4, and on Sunday, March 25, the Staff-Parish Relations Committee will be announcing our new Associate Pastors to serve at First United Methodist Church. This allows them to coordinate with the churches that they are presently serving. We believe that both of these pastors will follow in the great tradition of outstanding associate pastors we have so loved and enjoyed.

Dr. Will Cotton
Dr. Will Cotton
Due to a shortage of available clergy to serve our needs, both pastors will be coming from outside the Central Texas Conference. As you might imagine, going outside the conference meant competing with other conferences, so the process took some extra work. It also meant having strong coordination between Bishop Lowry and the bishop from the home conference of each pastor as well as their district superintendents.  The first associate will arrive on July 1 and the second on September 1.

What will we do in between? Preachers from inside our congregation and outside will be joining the rotation with me, including District Superintendent Brad Brittain and Bishop Lowry. Several of our retired pastors have offered to assist with pastoral care, funerals, counseling and other needs. Care teams of laypersons in our congregation will also be serving as visitors and callers for congregational care.

Administratively, staff members will be joining me in covering areas that our associate pastors would normally cover and laypersons will also be stepping in. I want to say thanks ahead of time for all those who will be offering. assistance and leadership during this time. My prayer is that we will be stronger as a church when this six months of prayer, preparation and serving together has concluded.

Sincerely in Christ,

Will Cotton Signature

Pie in the Face
Who gets a pie in the face this Sunday?
The results are in! This Sunday Jodi Marfell and Taylor Ory will get a pie in the face! Join us at 10:45 am near the Twin Oaks deck this Sunday, March 4, as we pie our Student Ministries staff! The students collected more than 7,000 items for the Backpack Project. With the help of the congregation, the church contributed more than 10,500 items that will go toward meals for students during Spring Break. Thank you to everyone that brought in items! Here is what we were able to achieve for our students:

  • Enough crackers for a full week for our 1100 students with some left over.
  • Almost 12 cases of individual cereals (we use about 20 cases a week)
  • A full week's worth of proteins for our students.
  • More applesauce than you can shake a stick at -- it's not counted yet.
  • Enough ramen for a full week, and that takes 80+ cases.

Resurrection Celebration has become one of our Holy Week traditions at First Church. It is an opportunity for  Children, accompanied by parents, to experience five events that occurred during Holy Week.
New this year! We are asking families to sign up for a time to begin their Walk through Holy Week. We hope the sign up will decrease the amount of time spent waiting in line outside of stations. Do allow 50 minutes to visit all five stations.  Sign up for your time today!

Bible Study
Wednesday Women's Bible Study
March 7 is the start date for a new study in the Wednesday Women's Bible Study group. Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely by Lysa TerKeurst is a six week study.
In Uninvited, Lysa shares her own deeply personal experiences with rejection-from the incredibly painful childhood abandonment by her father to the perceived judgment of the perfectly toned woman one elliptical over. Blending personal stories, a wry sense of humor, and biblical teachings, Lysa encourages her readers to live loved...to abide, delight, and dwell in God and practice an abundance mentality.

The group meets on Wednesday morning at 9:30 am and Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm in Bldg. 5-232/234. For more information or to register contact Janet Reynolds at 512.255.7198 or jreygma@gmail.com.

Disaster Response Team

The First Church Disaster Response Team headed to Victoria again this past weekend to provide a caring Christian presence for survivors of Hurricane Harvey. This was our team's
Disaster Response Team
fourth trip to the Coastal Bend since the devastating storm hit in August. We assisted 3 families in repairing leaking roofs, removing black mold and water-damaged drywall and paneling, and sealing up damaged siding. Read about our latest trip here.

There are still so many families needing help. As you drive through these small coastal cities, the evidence of the hurricane is everywhere. Houses are still damaged, trees are down, roads have huge holes and piles of debris. No wonder so many have lost hope.

To help First Church respond to this need, UMCOR is holding basic training course at First Church on April 7, 2018. This course prepares new team members to work safely during the recovery phase of disaster response. We are also planning two more trips: March 22-25, 2018 and April 19-22, 2018. For more information, contact Dave Scott at txgolfersall@gmail.com.
Heifer Project

Progress report on the Heifer Project - Kinders met their goal!

Elementary Sunday School classes all selected an animal as their goal to purchase during this spring mission. The children are very excited about their goals and have been working steadily towards them. During Sunday School, the children received (or will receive) a calendar produced by Heifer International. The calendar has a daily educational fact and opportunity to give a small amount based on what is in your own pantry or refrigerator. During the current season of Lent, we hope families will set aside a time daily, like at dinner or bedtime, to devote to the opportunities presented in the calendar.

Collected so far
$29.69 Chicks - $20
1st Girls $58.67 Rabbits - $60
1st Boys $58.68 Pig - $120
2nd Grade $129.75 Fish - $300
3rd Grade $129.12 Llama - $150
