School Closure, Spring Break & Home Learning

Dear Concord Hill Families;

I want to thank the Concord Hill community once again for your patience, support, and dedication during these uncertain and disruptive times. Turning our focus to the wellbeing of our children, families, and boarder community is our greatest responsibility, and each decision we make at Concord Hill School is aligned with this task.

As the extent of the impact of COVID-19 is evident both near and far, we will not be ready to safely resume school hours on CHS campus following Spring Break, as previously hoped. We have made the decision to extend Spring Break through Friday, April 10 . We will continue to monitor the situation closely, making decisions informed by the social distancing requirements necessary to flatten the curve, along with guidance from the federal and state governments, as well as working closely with peer schools and the Association of Independent Schools Greater Washington.

Our Faculty and Staff have worked diligently over the past week to develop pilot lessons and activities for our students; we hope these went well, and thank you to those who shared feedback. Please know that this week's activities were intended as practice sample lessons, and that full implementation of our Home Learning program will begin Tuesday, March 31 , following our Spring Break. More information about the Home Learning program, including a weekly schedule, expectations, and routines will be emailed to families on Monday, March 30. Visit our Home Learning Access page for more information about access, technology, and tool requirements.
A huge "Thank You" to Karen Opdahl, Director of Educational Technology, for her guidance and expertise throughout this process. I also want to convey my deepest appreciation to our Faculty members for their passion, dedication, creativity, and resilience through these unprecedented times. We are all juggling many balls as we figure out how to balance our professional and personal responsibilities as we work from home. The faculty and staff have been doing a wonderful job with such a positive attitude and super flexibility.

Starting this afternoon, the school will be closed to the public and only accessible to CHS personnel who need to retrieve materials. CHS will not provide phone coverage until school reopens, but faculty and staff members will be checking email. If you need to reach a member of our Faculty or Staff for any reason, please find their school contact information on our website, located at the bottom of the webpage.

All of us are being urged to do what we can to mitigate and contain the spread of COVID-19. Those steps involve what the experts call “social distancing.” Schools are closing as a public health precaution. So, too, are restaurants, movie theaters, and gyms. The combined message is clear: social distancing is imperative, and it is the best hope we have of avoiding an even more serious situation.
This can be difficult advice to heed, especially in close-knit communities like ours, where close personal relationships are fundamental. It is a hardship not to see friends or to enjoy the sense of camaraderie and connection with one another, especially during an extended break from school, when so many activities have been canceled. We hope you and your families will understand that, b y practicing these measures, we are helping to contain the spread of COVID-19 and hopefully expedite the timeline of when we can return to school.

At CHS we are focused on our community and know that we can further support each other safely by staying connected through technology! We'd love to hear your thoughts, messages of positivity, and ideas for spending time together at home! Please share photos and video messages with our CHS Community, via the below CHS Google folder!
As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. While this is not the spring break I am sure any of us planned for, I hope this time together is filled with lots of laughs, joy, and some moments of peace and sanity. We miss you all greatly and will see you (virtually) when Home Learning begins on Tuesday, March 31.

Thank you.

Nate Dennison
