Change your clocks, change your batteries
...
Every 85 seconds, a home fire occurs in the United States. Smoke alarms cut the risk of fire deaths in half - but only if they work.
On March 8, when you turn your clocks forward, make a lifesaving change - replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Changing batteries on a regular basis is your best defense against a home fire. For more information, call the Bloomfield Fire Dept. at (973) 680-4153.

DPW adds Monday grass pickup
If you normally get a Friday pickup of vegetative waste, now you can expect additional pickup on Mondays. Starting on or about April 6, the Department of Public Works and Parks will add a service day to ease the volume of grass clippings and leaves on the Friday route.
Remember, biodegradable bags must be placed at curbside the night before pickup. For Monday pickup, place bags on Sunday after 5 p.m.; for Friday pickup, place bags on Thursday after 5 p.m.
The change does not affect cardboard and commingled recycling. Learn more on the department Facebook page.

Website ove
rhaul brings mobile access
...
Mobile access to the web is the latest techno must-have and Bloomfield is trending hot. By late March, the Township website will have a fresh look, improved functionality and best of all, easy access from any mobile device.
Information Technolog
y Director Jean-Guy Lauture said content will be much the same, but organized differently. "Functionality is measured by how many clicks it takes to get to what you want," and the new site minimizes the search, he said.
The refresh also brings complete new websites for the Department of Health and Human Services a
nd the Recreation Department. The huge volume of information generated by each of those departments requires more than a web "page." The new department sites will be tied to the main Township site and will be
similar in appearance.
Bloomfield's existing website is seven years old. It is hosted by Web Epoch Interactive, Inc.

Kids eat better at healthy corner stores
...
Within blocks of your child's elementary school are corner stores offering drinks, packaged foods and deli items. Can you guess your child's top choices in those stores?
Bloomfield Health and Human Services is launching "Healthy Corner Store," a grant-funded program aimed at changing snacking behavior. In coming months, convenience stores popular among elementary school students will be encouraged to make healthy snacks not only available, but enticing.
Part of the effort will be working with school officials to figure out how to draw students to healthy snacks. Another effort will be finding incentives for store owners (four shops initially) to stock and display better snacks - such as fresh fruit, yogurt and certain energy bars - without hurting their bottom line.
Healthy Corner Store is funded with a ShapingNJ grant, in cooperation with the Partners for Health Foundation of Montclair.

Get fit, take the stairs
Faced with an elevator or a set of stairs, which would you choose?
If stairwells in the Township's public buildings are cleaned and decorated, Bloomfield Health and Human Services is betting Township employees and residents will choose the stairs.
Watch for a new spruce-up effort, starting with Town Hall. Artwork reflecting Bloomfield's culture and natural history will be placed in stairwells to create an inviting environment. Posters placed at key decision points will encourage the active choice. The effort may be extended to other municipal buildings during the program's pilot year.
Take the Stairs is funded with a ShapingNJ grant, in cooperation with the Partners for Health Foundation of Montclair.
