As I reflect on our recent "State Day on the Hill" and NAHU Capitol Conference, it makes me pause. Sometimes, it may seem daunting to try to get involved, make a difference, confront the wrongs affecting our clients and industry. And just when you think you've had enough, you get that phone call or letter from a client sharing how much you, your company, and vendor partners made a real difference in their lives.
It's easy to think that you can't change the system because the problem, issue, law, government is too big - Well that may be true as a single voice, but when you surround yourself with the strength of fellow NAHU members and NAHU staff, the collective efforts of individual
s become one LOUD UNIFIED VOICE.
This year's visit to Washington D.C. provided time to celebrate, to learn something new, to embrace opportunities for change, and even a sense of optimism which may have been missing in recent years. The State of Indiana sent a delegation of 21 members, 4 members representing NEIAHU.
The general sessions were very informative, breakout sessions challenging, region meeting exciting, Leadership training inspiring, and the meetings on the Hill - exhilarating.
There is so much that our NAHU team does for our industry. Every day, these folks work hard on our behalf so our stories, concerns, frustrations, and client struggles can be heard. This conference also provided a great opportunity to get the pulse of lawmakers, the election cycle, the challenges, and the possibilities that will continue to face our industry.
Our Collective Message during our Capitol visits with legislators focus on three areas:
1) Access to Licensed Benefit Professionals,
2) Choice of Health Plans, and
3) Changes to Increase Affordability.
Our association looks forward to the potential opportunities of working toward healthcare stability. To make the healthcare insurance market more efficient and more responsive to American employers and individual health consumers, NAHU believes some changes need to be made to ensure access, choice, and affordability. If you want more information on each of NAHU's key priorities, you can find them
Even if you don't make it to Capitol Conference or State Day on the Hill but believe in our association's efforts in protecting you, your clients, and our industry, then please consider supporting our Health Underwriters Political Action Committee both for the State (ISAHU PAC) and Federal (HUPAC). Help our Voice continue to be heard loud and clear. If you already contribute to the PAC, Thank You. For those who have been waiting to show your support, If not Now - When? Please visit
