"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."
~ Leo Buscaglia ~
Ms. Kim Craig is one of the newest clients of the Shelter Plus Care (SPC) program here at Capitol Hill Group Ministry. She came into the program in mid-September of 2015, after having been in Transitional Housing for over 2 years -- surpassing her one-year limit. Ms. Craig was anxious and hopeful to come into the SPC program; but also nervous about having to live independently with
her five year old daughter, all the while having to deal with her depression, anxiety, and multiple medical issues. The Shelter Plus Care team took heed to Ms. Craig's concerns and assured her that she would not be alone, that the doors here at CHGM would always be open. Within a month, Ms. Craig was accompanied by her new SPC Case Manager, Britney Mclean, to view several units in order to decide which apartment would be the best fit location wise and manageable with Ms. Craig's small monthly income from TANF.
On October 5
, 2015, Ms. Craig signed her lease for her new apartment and the Shelter Plus Care team congratulated her with household items and food bags from our partnering pantry at The Lutheran Church of the Reformation. During a home visit one day with Ms. Craig, she mentioned that her daughter's school had questioned her about their living situation after her daughter stated in class that she wished she and her mother had a couch where they could sit and read books together. Ms. Craig was heartbroken by this and felt helpless due to her lack of income and physical disabilities that made it difficult for her to look for a couch on her own. The SPC team immediately went into action, calling A Wider Circle and reaching out to other resources to see if the family could get a couch immediately. After talking to a member of CHGM's Board of Directors and having them jump in to assist with locating a couch, the team was able to secure a couch the next day and had it picked-up and delivered to Ms. Craig at the beginning of the following week! Ms. Craig's case manager also completed a referral for her to receive additional furniture from A Wider Circle soon after she moved into her new apartment, and she is scheduled for a pick-up date in May of 2016.
Having come from the Transitional Housing program with only a bed and television for herself and her daughter, Ms. Craig was internally grateful for the assistance from not only the Shelter Plus Care team but for all of the partner organizations and individuals who work with CHGM to come together to help families like Ms. Craig and her little girl transition into stable healthy lives!
