March 2018 | News & Notes
The CHARM-Arnold P. Gold Foundation Charter on Physician Well-Being, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association ( JAMA ) on March 29, is a landmark document designed to guide groups and individuals, from global healthcare organizations to medical students, residents and physicians. These guidelines to promote the well-being of health professionals have been developed for the first time with consensus and endorsed by more than a dozen leading health organizations.
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) announced the winners of the 2018 ACGME and Gold Foundation DeWitt (Bud) C. Baldwin, Jr. Awards: Excela Latrobe Hospital of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and Memorial Hospital of South Bend, Indiana. The two hospitals were honored for fostering a respectful and supportive learning environment for graduate medical education. Congratulations to both honorees, and thank you for upholding a culture of humanism.
As the Gold Foundation enters its 30th year, dramatic changes in the healthcare landscape have led to new strategies to maximize its impact. The Foundation is recommitting to its landmark early programs, including the now iconic White Coat Ceremonies and the Gold Humanism Honor Society, as well as continuing to expand its reach to the whole healthcare team. With this strategic re-focusing, the Board of Trustees has made the difficult decision to conclude the work of the Gold Foundation Research Institute. Read more about the strategic shift here.
Humanistic care touches every single member of the healthcare team. This year, the Gold Foundation is reaching more nurses and nursing students with several exciting initiatives, including the expansion of the Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest to include nursing students and the celebration of International Nurses Day at the United Nations.
