 In Memoriam

Perry Rosenthal, MD
1933-2018

Dr. Perry Rosenthal passed away on March 3, 2018. He received his MD from McGill University and completed a residency in Ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. While a resident, he founded the hospital's contact lens clinic. He was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Rosenthal was the co-founder of Polymer Technology Inc. (later acquired by Bausch & Lomb), which developed Boston Lens products including gas permeable lens materials. In 1986, he developed a gas-permeable scleral contact lens known as the Boston Scleral Lens. This device restored vision to thousands of patients worldwide who had been disabled by corneal diseases. In 1992, he created the Boston Foundation for Sight,  a non-profit that offered the Boston Scleral Lens to those who could benefit, regardless of their ability to pay. In 2013, he founded the non-profit Boston EyePain Foundation. He was the recipient of 12 Lifetime Awards and Honors including "Best Doctors in America" from 2005-2012.  In 2015, the Global Specialty Lens Symposium recognized Dr. Rosenthal as a scleral lens visionary.

The Scleral Lens Education Society is proud to recognize the work of Dr. Rosenthal and decided to embark upon a project that would allow individuals who have been instrumental in the development of modern scleral lenses to share their thoughts on scleral lenses with those of us who have begun to fit scleral lenses more recently.   This interview is the result of our desire to document and share his wisdom.

Resources for Scleral Lenses

Sclerallens.org  has great information for practitioners and patients alike! Printable information, videos, and brochures are available. New patient information handouts are available on our website:
Also visit the GPLI and I-site websites for valuable scleral lens information.
Membership & Fellowship

Membership allows contact lens fitters access to the practitioner's section of the website that contains scleral lens fitting resources.

One of the most frequent questions we get from members is: "How do I get my name listed in the Fitters section of the website?" To be listed as a Fitter on the website, you must become a Fellow of the SLS.

Optometrists, ophthalmologists, and Fellows of the Contact Lens Society of America (FCLSA) who have proven themselves in the field of scleral lens fitting can apply for status as a Fellow of the Scleral Lens Education Society.

Have an Interesting Case Report?

If you are a current fellow and have a scleral lens case report that you would be willing to share, please send it to  SLSPublishedWorks@gmail.com. The case does not have to be a formal report, but is intended for sharing clinical pearls.

These case reports may be featured on our website, social media, and in future newsletters.
